Watching the minimap

A glance every few seconds, not just at your lane.

From Iron
Professor Zéphyrinthe Academy's instructor

« Oh, look at that little square in the corner! It shows their jungler coming long before your screen does. One glance after every last hit. »

  1. A glance every few seconds

Your screen only shows your lane. Everything else is on the minimap: you look at it every few seconds, then back to your lane.

  2. Their jungler shows up

He walks into your team's ward, heading for your lane. He's not on your screen yet, but he is on the minimap.

  3. You back off at once

No need to wait until you see him: you walk back toward your tower while he's still on his way.

  4. The gank finds nobody

He arrives where you were: you're already safe. He wasted his time, and you kept your life.

  5. The classic mistake

Eyes on your lane only. He walks toward you on the minimap for seconds, in plain sight, and catches you.

When to do it

  • After every last hit or trade: one look at the map, then back to your lane.
  • When you want to walk up: check first that their jungler isn't on your side of the map.
  • When enemies go missing from their lanes: they may be on their way to you.

How to keep it

  • Count the enemies you can see: whoever is missing could be anywhere, maybe near you.
  • Remember where their jungler was last seen, and which way he was heading.
  • He shows up heading your way? Back off right away, before he's on your screen.
The classic mistakeStaring at your lane. Their jungler walked toward you on the minimap for several seconds, and you only saw him when he was on you.
Good to knowThe minimap only shows what your team sees. An empty river doesn't mean a safe river: it may just be dark.

The tip for your rank

Iron to Silver

Take one habit: every time you last-hit a minion, glance at the minimap. That's already every few seconds.

Gold to Emerald

Don't just look, read it: who's missing, where their jungler was last seen, and how long ago.

Diamond and above

Read the whole map, not just your side: where they are tells you where they aren't, so when you can push, invade or take an objective.
